
He began playing the violin at the age of six and studied with several teachers, including Dr. Ilona Hencz and Ferenc Halász at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He also studied chamber music with masters such as Géza Németh (violist with the Bartók Quartet) Mihály András (composer, conductor, cellist), Ferenc Rados (pianist) and György Kurtág (composer).
In 1979, he won the József Szigeti International Violin Competition, which enabled him to become a soloist and begin touring throughout Europe. In 1981, he was awarded a scholarship to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Professor György Pauk.
His international career took a turn in 1984 when he met conductor Claudio Abbado and joined the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, where he remained for three years. He played under the baton of famous conductors such as Sir Georg Solti, Colin Davis and Ádám Fischer.
He also won several prizes, including the Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition in 1985 and the Tibor Varga International Competition in Sion in 1986, which enabled him to remain in Switzerland for three years as assistant to Professor Tibor Varga.
In 1989, he became concertmaster of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, a position he will hold until 2022. Stuller has also enjoyed a distinguished career as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with artists such as Imre Rohmann, Miklós Perényi, Radu Lupu, Maria João Pires, Christian Zacharias and many others. He has performed under the baton of prestigious conductors, including Nello Santi and Joshua Weilerstein.
In addition to his concert activities, Stuller is also a highly respected violin teacher.
He taught at the Fribourg Conservatory from 1997 to 2003, before succeeding Tibor Varga in Sion. Since 2011, he has been a professor at the HEMU in Lausanne and Sion.
Gyula Stuller teaches in five languages, including French, English, German, Hungarian and Japanese.
He is also the artistic director of the Automne Musical d’Ollon chamber music festival in Switzerland. His family is also musical: his wife, Yukari Shimanuki, is a violist, his daughter, Júlia Stuller, is a cellist, and his son, Barnabás Stuller, is a violinist. Together, they form the Stuller Quartet, whose first album was released in 2022.
