Johan Schmidt is one of the personalities of the Belgian musical life. He has acquired a remarkable reputation due to his virtuosity as by his sensitivity.
Student of Master Eduardo del Pueyo, he then perfected with Master Karl-Heinz Kämmerling in Hanover.

He has participated in numerous international competitions. He is the winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Musical Competition of Belgium (Brussels) for which he also won the RTBF Audience Award, First Prize at the Maria Callas Competition (Athens), Third Prize at the Tchaikovsky International Competition (Moscow), First Prize at the Japan Competition (Tokyo) and Laureate of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (Fort Worth)
Johan Schmidt regularly plays with the main Belgian orchestras (ONB, Philharmonique de Liège and Filarmonisch Orkest van Vlanderen), and he also performs with international orchestras such as: New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the RTL Orchestra and the National Orchestra of France (Lille), Quingdao Orchestra (China), under the direction of conductors P. Bartholomew, J. Semkov, K. Takaseki, T. Bloomfield, KA Richenbacker, F Schipway, P. Daniel, G. Neuhold and Jean-Claude Casadesus.

His solo qualities led him to be the guest of prestigious venues such as the Munich Gasteig, the Berlin Schauspielhaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Châtelet Auditorium in Paris, the Suntory and Casals Halls in Tokyo, Osaka Symphony Hall, Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, Herod Aticus Theater in Athens, Brussels Palace of Fine Arts and Tel Aviv Museum, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Quindao Grand Theater, Dailan Grand Theater, Paris Theater from the city,..
His interest in chamber music led him to perform with violinist Augustin Dumay, Malher Piano Quartet, American String Quartet and Eyal Shiloach, Ronald Van Spaendonck, Laurent Breuninger and Elsa Grether.
Many performances have been broadcasted by various TVs: P.B.S. nationwide (USA), ZDF (Germany), NHK (Japan), VRT and RTBF (Belgium) as well as TV5.

Several recording projects are underway, during his tour in China in 2018, a CD dedicated to Schumann and Lizst will be released in China.
2018 will also see the appearance of the full-length four-handed Poulenc with pianist Jun Kano for the Azur Classics label.

Johan Schmidt has been awarded the Leonardo da Vinci Prize, crowning a young European and presented by the Rotary Club.

Johan Schmidt is also a professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Quingdao University (China) and Senzoku University (Tokyo).
He regularly gives masterclasses around the world.
