Eguisheim

Eguisheim is pressed by rolling hills planted with vines. Located at an altitude of 210 meters, in the heart of Alsace, this wine producing village deploys 339 acres of his land at 5 kilometers from Colmar and near Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel, European capitals. Birthplace of Pope Saint Leo IX, Eguisheim enjoys a worldwide reputation.

Fortified city from 1257, Eguisheim is proud of its picturesque streets concentric half-timbered houses richly decorated with flowers. Sixteen courses tithe, fountains, and a church with organs Callinet contribute to the historical character of the village.

The parish church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. Remodeled in Gothic style in 1220. The structure of the 14th century bell tower supports four bells, the most important comes from Marbach Abbey. The portal of the church contains a polychrome wood sculpture called “Virgin openable window.” This work of the 13th and 14th centuries is the sole example of this type in Alsace, with that of Kaysersberg.

The Lower Castle of Eguisheim on the Place Saint-Leon, is backed by an octagonal enclosure characteristic of the 13th century, made of stone ashlar. The castle is only accessible during guided tours offered by the Tourist Office.
