Professional biography of Urmas Tammik
Urmas Tammik

Urmas Tammik was born in 1964 in Tallinn (Estonia) where he began his musical studies at the age of 7 years old.

He perfected at « Tchaïkovski » Moscow Superior Conservatory in Mikhail Homitser’s and Natalia Shakhovskaïa’s classes and at the same time, he studied conducting with Pavel Kogan.

Urmas Tammik obtained numerous awards at National and International competitions such as First Prize in 1987 at the Estonia National Competition, Prize at the International Tchaïkovski competition in 1990 and First Prize at the International competition « Nicanor Zabaleta » in San Sebastián in Spain in 1991.

Then Urmas Tammik began a cellist concertist career ; he played with most important orchestras in Soviet Union and he participates in tours as a soloist in all ancient URSS. He also recorded for radio and television.

Urmas Tammik is the founder of a duo with the russian pianist Isabella Tchekushina.

Nowadays renowned internationally, the Tammik Duo obtained numerous Prizes in chamber music International competitions such as Special Prize at the Trapani International Competition in Italy in 1994 and the first Prize of Vierzon International Competition in France in 1995.

Urmas Tammik has been invited to take part as a member of Beethoven famous Quartett with Oleg Krysa, Nicolaï Zabavnikov and Feodor Druzhinin (replaced after by Mikhaïl Kugel) from 1988 to 1991.

Then, in 1991, he went to Spain where he became solo cello in The Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra.

At the same time, he pursues his concert career by playing in tours in Germany and in Austria in 1988 with the Washington Symphony Orchestra (USA).

Critics has been unanimously laudatory : "Urmas Tammik has demonstrated a hudge expression and very brillant virtuosity. "("Deister-und Weserzeitung") or « he has been totaly fascinating everyone with such facility ... » ("Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung").

In 2005, Urmas Tammik is nominated solo cello at Mulhouse Symphonic Orchestra in France where he lives nowadays.

Urmas Tammik is also professor ; he has been teaching at Queen Sofia Superior School for Music in Madrid from in 2000 and 2001 and from 1996 to 2004, he has been conducting and teaching the Young Malaga Orchestra (JOPM).

Urmas Tammik is now cello Professor at Colmar CRD - Conservatoire à rayonnement départemental.
