Born in Italy, Gionata Sgambaro graduated at the Vicenza Conservatory, where he also studied harmony, counterpoint and composition.

He perfected his studies in Philippe Bernold and Robert Thuillier's classes at the CNSMD - Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse - in Lyon where he won his final course diploma successfully.

A the age of 17, Gionata Sgambaro wins the 2nd Prize of chamber music at the «Franz Schubert» competition in Città di Ovada (IT) and in 2002, he gets the 2nd Prize at the wind instruments international competition of Rovereto (IT). He also makes an improvement course of baroque flute at the Geneva Music Conservatory with Serge Saita as professor. At the same time, he attends performance courses with Barthold Kuijken.

Gionata Sgambaro plays in such prestigious ensembles as, the France National Orchestra, the Lyon National Orchestra, the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lyon's Opera Orchestra, Lausanne Vocal and Instrumental Band under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy, David Robertson, Claus Peter-Flor, Theobald Guschelbauer, Wayne Marshall, Michel Corboz, Louis Langré, Michel Plasson, Pascal Rophé, Ivan Fischer, Reinhard Goebel, Ton Koopman.

He plays in world-famous concert halls: Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Carnegie Hall (New York), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Royce Hall (Los Angeles), Zellerbach Hall (Berkeley), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Théâtre du Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Cité de la Musique (Paris), Doolensaal (Rotterdam), Auditorium Maurice Ravel (Lyon), Duo - Auditorium (Dijon).

Since 2003, he has been soloist flute of the Ensemble Les Siècles, chamber orchestra created an directed by François-Xavier Roth.

He regularly performs with the most talented artists in the european main cities and he often plays particularly with Frédéric Vaysse-Knitter and his brother Samuele Sgambaro, both pianists.

He played a lot of concertos as soloist : Mozart in Italy with the «Haydn» Orchestra of Trento and Bolzano, Tafelmusik from Telemannin in Nantes, Mozart at the Epernay Theater, the Pastoral Concierto of J. Rodrigo with the Grenoble Orchestra, Vivaldi's op.10 Concertos, the 5th Brandebourgeois Concerto at «Les clavecins de Chartres» Festival.

In 2008 he played, at the Chartres' Theater, one of his composition: Percorso I, for soloist electronic flute.

Involved in pedagogy and teaching, he taught at the CRR - Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional - in Montpellier, at the CRD - Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental - in Chartres and, actually, he is Professor at the CRR in Rennes.
